Wanganui is an urban area run by a District Council in New Zealand; it had once been a city until the 1989 administrative reorganization which turned it into a district. However, it is still regarded by most locals as a city. Its name can also be spelled as Whanganui. Majority of the city lies on the northwest bank of the Whanganui River. Victoria Avenue is the city’s main street; plenty of grand and beautiful buildings and structures can be found along this street, including Watt Fountain.

Other prominent landmarks in the city include the tall War Memorial Tower located on Durie Hill, the Royal Wanganui Opera House built in 1901, the historic Sarjeant Art Gallery in Queen’s Park, and its 4 bridges – City Bridge, Cobham Bridge, Dublin Street Bridge, and the Aramoho Railway Bridge for rail and pedestrians only. The district and the region located near it are served by the redesigned Wanganui Airport. This airport handles regular domestic flights to Wellington, Auckland, and Taupo. Visitors can find cheap tickets offered by Air New Zealand and Eagle Airways. The city is easily accessible from domestic destinations such as Auckland where travel time is just at 1h. Meanwhile, those from Christchurch take a connecting flight at either Auckland or Wellington and travel for at least 2h 5min (via Wellington) or 3h (via Auckland). For those coming from Wellington, the travel time is estimated at 35min.
