Rotorua is a city located on the shores of Lake Rotorua in the North Island of New Zealand. Its name (full: Te Rotorua-nui-a-Kahumatamomoe) means “The second great lake of Kahumatamomoe” in Maori, a name it got from the lake which is the second lake discovered by Kahumatamomoe. It is the capital of the Rotorua District.
This city is a major tourist destination due to the presence of a large number of geysers, bubbling hot mud pools, and places with distinct geothermal activity; it is even nicknamed as the Sulphur City due to the pungent sulfur smell from these geothermal spots. Still, despite the smell, the city is frequented by a lot of tourists who are drawn by the hot pools where they can soak their feet and relax. Aside from the hot spots, the city also offers 17 beautiful lakes which allow a range of activities, including swimming and waterskiing. The Whakarewarewa Forest is another destination, one that is popular with mountain biking enthusiasts.

The Rotorua International Airport handles flights to and from Rotorua. There are direct, non-stop flights to other domestic destinations – Wellington International Airport, Auckland International Airport, and Christchurch International Airport. Currently, all these flights are provided by Air New Zealand but other carriers might soon provide services to this airport. Still, tourists can find discounted fares with this airline. A trip between the city and Christchurch merely lasts 1 hour and 40 minutes while a traveler from Wellington can easily reach the city within 1 hour and 5 minutes. Those coming from Auckland only have to travel for 40 minutes to reach the city.
