Rabaul is a township located in the province of East New Britain in Papua New Guinea. Located right on the edge of the caldera of an active volcano with the same name, the town is continually threatened by various volcanic activities which had already damaged the town several times. The most recent major volcanic catastrophe involved the eruption in 1994 which had damaged most of the town.

Today, most of the old town is buried in black volcanic ash – with portions of buildings and structures sticking out from the ash. Still, the town holds an appeal to tourists who wish to see firsthand the damage that could be inflicted by nature. Because most parts of the town look like a set from an apocalyptic movie, a lot of tourists come to visit. Of course, there are bars, hotels, restaurants, and other establishments still operating in the area to cater to the needs of its remaining residents and tourists. It is also visited by those who love scuba diving and snorkeling as some sites are still available. The town has retained its value as a port due to its deep waters.

The town lost its airport during the 1994 eruption – it was relocated in Tokua but retained its name, Rabaul Airport. Still, because of this new location, it is also known as the Tokua Airport. Travelers from Auckland, Christchurch, and Wellington in New Zealand are able to reach this airport through connecting flights at Brisbane and Port Moresby. Travel times are at 23h 40min from Wellington, 21h 35min from Auckland, and 23h 50min from Christchurch.
