Izmir is the seat of Izmir Province in Turkey; it is the country’s second largest port city and is the third most populous. An international port city, its port, Konak Pier, was designed by no less than Gustave Eiffel, the engineer who created Eiffel Tower and the armature of Statue of Liberty. The pier has recently been restored and opened as a high-end shopping mall; it is considered a landmark of the city.

The modern city of Izmir had once been the ancient city of Smyrna, one of the oldest on the Mediterranean basin. Remnants of this old city as well as additions that were created in its long history have created numerous landmarks all over the city. Some important landmarks include the well-preserved Agora of Smyrna which can be explored as the Agora Open Air Museum of Izmir, the Clock Tower at the Harbor, the Ottoman Kemeralti bazaar zone, Izmir Birds Paradise located in Çigli, Inciralti Sea Museum, and several historic mansions, houses, and synagogues.

Domestic and international flights are served by the Adnan Menderes International Airport. It is possible to reach the city from virtually all parts of the world by taking connecting flights to cities that offer trips to Izmir – examples are London, Munich, Istanbul, Paris, Amsterdam, and Berlin. Travel times for those who wish to reach the city from New Zealand vary but are estimated to be at least 31h 5min for those coming from Wellington, 29h 5min for those from Auckland, and 28h 40min for those from Christchurch.
