Haikou, the “Coconut City”, is the capital of Hainan Province of the People’s Republic of China. A prefecture level city, the city also acts as the administrative center of the province and the center for economy, finance, transportation, and culture. It is also the largest city and is the main port in the island. The city is a surprising and beautiful of the east and the west – with buildings created in Southeast Asian style or in Portuguese and French. The city is a popular tourist destination, receiving millions of tourists yearly.

Anyone traveling from Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch in New Zealand has plenty of options for connecting flights to Haikou – Bangkok, Sydney, Guangzhou, Melbourne, and many others. Travel times are estimated to be at 17h 15min for those coming from Christchurch and Auckland while those traveling from Wellington reach the city within 17h 30min.
