Cheap Flights to Dili, East Timor from New Zealand

 

 

The capital of East Timor now known as Timor Leste, Dili is located in the northern coast of Timor Island. This laidback capital carries major Portuguese influences, from villa-lined beach roads to a largely Roman Catholic population. It serves as the main entry point to East Timor’s burgeoning tourism.

Rising out of the ashes of the country’s struggle from Indonesian rule, East Timor is welcoming tourists to its wonderful attractions. Main highlight in the capital is the remnants of the Old Portuguese era. Though most buildings in Dili were scorched after East Timor voted for independence from Indonesian rule, there are still many colonial structures still standing today. The Prime Minister’s office is housed in the old building occupied by the Portuguese governor. There are religious landmarks such as the Saint Mary column, the Statue of Christ atop a hill overlooking Dili and the Church of the Immaculate Concepcion.

Timorese beaches are perfect for snorkeling and diving. Just outside of Dili are good beaches within a 15-minute drive from the main area. The most popular beach is found near the Cristo Rei statue. Areia Branca or Pasir Putih is in a secluded cove, offering a remote getaway with a truly idyllic charm. There are more beaches in Baucau, the neighboring town accessible through a 3-hour drive. The hill towns of Maubisse and Alieu bring mountain scenery and cooler climes.

Airlines such as Qantas Airways, Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines enter Dili through the Komoro Airport. Flights from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch take 17-21 hours to reach East Timor. Check for affordable rates and schedules.
