The capital of Bangladesh has a culture as richly woven as its renowned muslin-weaving industry. Dhaka lays claim to what was once an imperial seat of the Mughal Viceroy of Bengal in 1608 AD. Since then, it has developed into a bustling modern capital with a combination of architectural highlights and historical sites.

The colorful bustle in Dhaka is more evident in its major waterfront of Sadarghat along the banks of Buriganga River. All types of vessels from small motor boats to yachts are docked on the harbor. The main commercial hub is Motijheel situated at the heart of the city and is close to the Kamalapur Railway Station. The city streets come alive with colorful rickshaws breezing past each other.

Dhaka is also known as a city of Islamic mosques and Hindu temples, and there are several hundred of them. Most prominent are Dhakeshwari Temple, Baitull Mukarram-National Mosque, Star Mosque, Domed Mosque, Chawkbazar Mosque and Huseni Dalan Mosque. Some of these religious structures have stood in the city since the 11th century. Another outstanding architectural treasure in Dhaka is Lalbagh Fort, composed of many buildings and temples inside. Built by the son of Mughal emperor Aurangazeb, the fort dates back to 1678 and witnessed the bloody revolt against the British Empire in 1857. Noteworthy structures inside are Lalbagh Mosque, the tomb of Pari Bibi and the Hammam that now houses a museum.

Dhaka promises to be a delightfully exotic destination. Airlines such as Emirates, Air New Zealand, DragonAir and Cathay Pacific have regular flights from Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch. Traveling time takes anywhere from 15 to 19 hours.
