Cheap Flights to Cebu, Philippines from New Zealand

 

 

Often hailed as the Queen City of the South in the Philippines, Cebu City is a modern metropolis that is largely progressive with its seaport, international airport and export trade. Due to the beaches, festive fever and delectable cuisine, Cebu continues to be one of the most popular tourist draws in the country.

Cebu’s history started when the Spaniards came to spread Christianity. A majority of the city’s top attractions are focused on religious traditions in Cebu. Foremost among landmarks is the Basilica of Sto. Niño; it houses the statue of the Holy Child that was brought by the conqueror Ferdinand Magellan. Fridays see a steady stream of devotees to pay their respects to the patron saint of the city. Across the City Hall and near the basilica is the Magellan’s Cross, housed in an octagonal-shaped pavilion. Fort San Pedro was a small Spanish settlement that is now converted into a garden and museum where exhibits and cultural relics from the Spanish colonial times are on display.

Mactan Island, linked to the main Cebu Island through a bridge, holds more attractions for everyone. Lapu-Lapu Monument is a shrine erected to honor the local chieftain who killed Magellan. Nearby is the luxury resort of Shangri-la Hotel, a favorite honeymoon retreat with its private beach and spa. Beaches in Cebu are refreshingly clean and encourage diving apart from swimming. Sandy havens worth checking out include Moalboal beach, Badian Island, Camotes Island, Malapascua Island and Olango Island.
