Broken Hill is a mining city located in outback New South Wales in Australia. This city got its name from a series of hills that appear to have a break in them; however, these hills have long been mined and no longer exist but the city has retained its name. The city is actually the longest lived mining city in Australia as it sat on a massive ore body that contained the largest deposit of silver, lead, and zinc mineral deposits in the world. Today, it still functions as a mining town but is slowly encouraging tourism to find another source of income that does not rely on mining.
As tribute to more than 800 miners and workers who had lost their lives to the mines since the beginning, a massive Miner’s Memorial as erected at the Line of Lode mine. The grand Trades Hall is another important landmark while visitors can always see the man-made mullock heaps around the city, a silent witness to the city’s years in the mining industry. Other notable landmarks or attractions are the Pro Hart Gallery and Sculpture Park, Sculpture Symposium, Silverton Camel Farm, and many others.

Broken Hill Airport handles regular flights by Regional Express to domestic destinations such as Dubbo, Sydney, and Adelaide. Airports handling flights between some New Zealand cities and Broken Hill include the Auckland International Airport, Wellington International Airport, and Christchurch International Airport. Airlines such as Air New Zealand, Qantas Airways, and Cathay Pacific offer connecting flights between these airports, with travel times of at least 10 hours.
