Avarua is both a district and town located in the northern portion of the Rarotonga Island, belonging to the Cook Islands. It is the national capital of Cook Islands and is the location of several government buildings and services. There are restaurants and shops where tourists can check out local specialties and cuisine. There are also markets and shopping establishments selling colorful fabric, handicraft, and precious black pearls. This town thrives on fishing, agriculture, trade, and tourism.
The island is comprised of a sharp contrast of beautiful beaches on one side and rugged mountainous terrain on the other side – perfect for enjoying a wide range of activities within one place. Muri Beach is the most popular beach in the area but there are also other beaches that are quieter and have lesser tourists. Anyway, most of the beaches in the area have calm waters due to the presence of reefs that act as natural barriers and surf breakers. Most of the time, tourists come to visit Avarua for its beaches and to explore the rest of the island.

Rarotonga International Airport serves the town as well as the rest of the island. It is also the main international gateway to Cook Islands. It serves regular flights to and from Sydney, Auckland, Los Angeles, Papeete, and other domestic and international destinations. Because travelers from Auckland have direct access to the city, travel times are just at 3 hours and 55 minutes. Those coming from Wellington and Christchurch have to travel 6 hours and 10 minutes and 6 hours and 30 minutes, respectively, to reach the city, with connecting flights at Auckland.
